That sudden knot in your calf muscle that wakes you at night…it usually strikes when you’re lying down and you point your toes and the calf muscles suddenly contract. No one knows why, but cramps may become more frequent as you get older. Wearing high heels seems to contribute, especially if you aren’t used to them. Diuretics may also promote leg cramps.
- ON THE SPOT RELIEF: Flex your foot – that is, point your toes toward your knee. Or grab your toes and the ball of your foot and pull them toward your knee. Then massage the muscles gently. If this doesn’t cure the cramp, try walking, placing as much weight as possible on your heels. An ice pack can help if pain persists.
- PREVENTION: Try not to point your toes while stretching or exercising. Be sure your blankets and sheets are not so tightly tucked in as to bend your toes down. Try to sleep on your side. Avoid high-heeled boots and shoes. Before going to bed, try calf-stretching exercises.

Most of the time I hear from amateur players “I didn’t putt very well” or “I putted terribly.” Putting is probably the skill practiced least of all of the facets of the game. The best putters, however, are interested and think about feeling more of the distance than worrying about the direction. Go to the putting green and practice straight uphill putts of 20 and 30 feet to get a feel for distance. Most players practice 4 or 5 foot putts because they all have a lot of putts from that distance. Mechanics are important, but try to see the line and get your first putt into that 2-foot circle area around the hole.
Hopefully I’ll start hearing, “I putted very well today!!”
